What is functional training?

There have been many articles lately, giving different opinions about functional training and its benefits.

This one will attempt to give you an understanding of what Functional training is, and why its popularity.

Maybe you have seen someone doing a workout of the day (WOD) in the park, or in your local gym doing some pretty crazy looking exercises. Through our training methodology at Page Fitness Athletic Club, clean eating, nutrition and community spirit, we aim to make your life better by providing a holistic health approach. So before we judge functional fitness fanatics, let’s take a look at:

What is functional training?


First, it is not your average fitness program. It is the preferred fitness program for service personnel, due to its application and relevance to life situations. It is a deliberate attempt to optimize physical competence, using ten recognized fitness domains: Cardiovascular and Respiratory Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance, and Accuracy.

Through constantly varied, various intensity functional movements, functional training aims to make life better for practitioners. Anyone can take part in the fun, but challenging training methodology – from children to elderly. For recreational athletes, it provides the training direction and competition to keep you motivated and to help you realize your dreams of a healthier you. Even professional athletes can use functional style training to enhance their performances.

Our functional training workouts are modified & tailored though a series of exciting challenges and are used to monitor your progress as you get stronger, fitter, faster. Coaches can design their workouts for members to reach particular goals, and there are unlimited challenges available for all to experience. 

Here at PAGE FITNESS, you will not find bulging muscle men grunting at themselves in the mirror as they perform bicep curls! We prefer to mention your ability to perform and your desire to develop as the most beautiful human trait. You can expect to hear us say “leave your ego at the door,” which will provide you with a relaxed feeling and a sense of humility. Now with vanity at an all-time low, you will see that what you put into your training, you will get out.


All out training programs are all functional in design & carefully constructed to include the 10 recognized fitness domains as mentioned earlier. Each program is split into a fitness focus that is intended to maximize performance gains (i.e. our Power & Strength programs).

A lack of understanding causes an Issue across the Fitness community regarding functional training.

The issue starts and ends with people not considering proper technique, due to a lack of expertise and clear understanding of functional training methodology. In this time, we find the industry in inundated with "wannabe fitness professionals" who believe watching YOUTUBE will qualify them in sound physical movement patterns and program design. However, the truth is that even though it is a great resource, YOUTUBE cannot be compared to the in-depth subject knowledge & coaching ability found in quality fitness establishments as found in PAGE FITNESS. 

It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it is a fantastic option for those people who may be discouraged from the conventional gym environment, or tired of not seeing the results they are craving. Few can argue that functional training achieves results, as this real-life approach to training does not allow excuses get in its way. The development of social bonding and camaraderie only heightens the PAGE FITNESS training experience.
